About

Paolo, Giulio and Riccardo meet in Rome during street riots in 1982. The three idealistic and hungry for life teenagers become inseparable, and soon the trio in sync is joined by a beautiful, golden-haired Gemma, with whom Paolo falls madly in love. Over time, life verifies the main characters’ dreams, brings personal disappointments, ideological collapse, professional frustrations. At the same time, however, the growing self-awareness and maturity enable the four friends to attempt to repair the relations broken as a result of bad choices. The film “The Best Years” impresses with its narrative success – the director and scriptwriter Gabriele Muccino follows his characters for forty years filled with drama, their trials and tribulations being, in fact, a reflection of the history of contemporary Italy. The then hits, saturated range of colours and golden light give the film a nostalgic grace characteristic of Giuseppe Tornatore’s initiation films; comments made by the characters straight to the camera – a mischievous sense of humour, and the actors’ courageous acting fills the film with intense emotions.
