About

A three-generational family goes to one of the Chilean isles. Soon it turns out that the travel will not be remembered only as an innocent vacation: the parents want to convince the grandparents to support financially a new tourist business. A strained situation gets worse when a local helper vanishes without a trace and the family gets stuck on the island. Stretched between Lucrecia Martel’s “The Swamp” and Joanna Hogg’s “Archipelago”, the new film of Jorge Riquelme Serrano also flirts with the poetics of a thriller, but above all it is a gloomy family drama drowning in class conflicts and dirty secrets. Scenes in “Some Beasts” were written for long takes shot with a still camera and completed by a disturbing soundtrack. One of the roles is taken by Paulina García known from “Gloria” by Sebastián Leilo, here cast in a completely different role than the ones which helped her build her professional image.

“Some Beasts”, awarded at the Festival in San Sebastián, is a claustrophobic family drama set on one of the Chilean isles. When the characters become cut off from the world, dark secrets and conflicts come to light.
