About

Just like in the case of his most remarkable works – The Colour of Paradise and Children of Heaven, Majid Majidi once again decides to portray underage characters (Rouhollah Zamani, who played one of them, was awarded with the Mastroianni Award in Venice). The previous films, however, forced the children to face problems which were inadequate to their age because the director wanted to use them as a metaphor to talk about the current social condition. The Sun Children about the contemporary Iran also provides interesting information, for instance that the country is unable to cope with drugs and war refugees coming from Afghanistan. Fortunately, here, the children can be just children – at least to some extent. We take a look at the trials and tribulations of the four children of the streets who dream of a treasure hidden underground in a social school. Majidi was inspired by some of the best traditions of the picaresque novel and as Charles Dickens, brutally confronts the world of children imagination with a completely unromantic reality. Dickens criticized capitalism for turning a deaf ear to the marginalized individuals. Majidi proves that not much has changed since then.
